Android Market Hits the 10 Billion Mark For App Downloads
Piggybacking off of it’s recent accomplishment of beating out Firefox in the browser battle, Google has reached another major benchmark in it’s Android market by reaching it’s 10 billionth app download.
This is a pretty monumental achievement for Android. They’ve reached a massive level of popularity in just a few short years with exponential growth, and has proved to be a worthy contender to the Apple iPhone.
It’s hard to ignore just how fast Android is growing. Just check out this growth chart:
Google’s Eric Chu, director of Android Developer Ecosystem, made the announcement in a blog post. Chu says Android Market is growing at a rate of 1 billion app downloads every 30 days. It took 20 months for Android Market to reach its first 1 billion downloads and an additional five months for the second billion.
To help celebrate the milestone, Google is running a promotion over the next 10 days in which the company will sell apps that normally fetch between 99 cents and $6.99 a pop for only 10 cents each. Google is starting off today with Asphalt 6 HD,Color & Draw for Kids, Endomondo Sports Tracker Pro,Fieldrunners HD, Great Little War Game, Minecraft, Paper Camera, Sketchbook Mobile, Soundhound Infinity and Swiftkey X.
